Malas have 108 beads ~ a sacred Number of the Universe, also the number of the Upanishads. There is an extra bead on the bottom called the Guru Bead.
Malas are commonly used for meditation ~ for counting mantras ~ much like a Rosary. In this case the extra bead is not crossed ~ you reverse direction when you reach it.
